natalie merchant - leave your sleep (2010)

2cd: buy / listen / myspace / bandsite

       (in the file pile)

been a long time since i really listened to anything that natalie merchant has put out... maybe since tigerlilly... i listened to parts of ophelia when it came out but i don't think i went back and really listened to it and i never got a copy of motherhood either or the one she independently released that followed it... this new one is sounding really good at times, especially when there's a lot of orchestration and different things going on or when she brings on the blues... i may just have to go dig up my copy of ophelia, dust it off and have a look into motherhood and the carpenter's daughter one. there are some songs that aren't settling too well, which i expected since that's how it goes with me and natalie... there are a lot of goofy sounding songs that i don't know how to describe... like they're old folktale tunes or jigs she tried to mock up... not really my style... but in between those are a lot of really good songs... i may just have to go through this slightly overwhelming a little over an hour and a half double cd and turn it into one 40 minute or so lp that i'll really like a lot.
